Public Health

Proceeding contribution from Clive Betts (Labour) in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 30 November 2021. It occurred during Debates on delegated legislation on Public Health.

The word mandatory was used but is that not just a word in the statutory instrument? In practice is it not unenforceable? As Darren Pearce, the manager of Meadowhall shopping centre, said in evidence to the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee, The biggest problem we had last time was about trying to get face coverings to be worn. I saw a group of young people going to Meadowhall, saying very loudly, If they ask you, just say youve got asthma. Then they say, Weve got asthma. Were exempt, and there is nothing anyone can do, is there? That causes all sorts of tensions with the shop assistants and with other people wearing face masks, who feel that some people are getting away with it. What is the Minister going to do about that situation?
