Customs and Borders

Proceeding contribution from Chuka Umunna (Labour) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 26 April 2018. It occurred during Backbench debate on Customs and Borders.

I am grateful to the Father of the House for giving way. He has served in this House for 48 years, if I am not mistaken, and served in a number of Governments. He will know that this Government have been advised by their own officials that leaving the single market and the customs union will make this country poorer. In all his time in this House, can he think of any Government who have knowingly taken a decision of this gravity that would make the country poorer? Can he think of any example in which any Government he has seen have done that?
