Defence Reform Bill

Proceeding contribution from Tobias Ellwood (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 16 July 2013. It occurred during Debate on bills on Defence Reform Bill.

Let me finish this point about the Typhoon; then I will be delighted to give way. Unlike other aircraft of its generation, the Typhoon has a flight control system designed by one country and a weapons release system designed by another. That means that every time a missile system upgrade is required, two complex computer

systems have to be reconciled, which makes it far too complicated and costly to do any major upgrades to the software or the missiles. That is why there is a delay in converting the Typhoon from an air-to-air aircraft to a multi-role aircraft with ground attack capability.
