Health Bill [Lords]

Proceeding contribution from Lord Lansley (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Monday, 8 June 2009. It occurred during Debate on bills on Health Bill [Lords].
Will the Secretary of State confirm that the reduction in the prevalence of smoking was greater in the 1980s, under the Conservative Government, than it has been at any other time in the last 50 years, because of the impact of the increase in the price of cigarettes? The increase in prices in Iceland had the same impact. On the issue of evidence, we believe that evidence exists to support the proposition that we should ban tobacco vending machines in the public areas of licensed premises. Why are the Government resisting that suggestion?
