I hugely welcome the reports from both the Home Affairs Committee, which the right hon. Gentleman chairs, and the Joint Committee on Human Rights. I simply want to echo what he said. He is quite right—there is absolutely no doubt in my mind about this—that the debate on detention periods was not sufficiently informed by sensible discussion and the laying of the groundwork beforehand. That must be avoided in future.
