Animal Welfare Bill

Proceeding contribution from Lord Rooker (Labour) in the House of Lords on Tuesday, 23 May 2006. It occurred during Debate on bills and Committee proceeding on Animal Welfare Bill.
Before the noble Baroness withdraws the amendment, I have received a note, and the sooner that something is put on record, the better for our next stage. Performing animals are currently regulated under the Performing Animals (Regulation) Act 1925. We intend to revise that by secondary legislation—this is where we need scope for flexibility. We are currently working with welfare groups and the industry on that issue. I hope that I shall have further information by Report, but that work is going on. We can use secondary legislation to reform the old legislation regarding performing animals.
