Identity Cards Bill

Proceeding contribution from Nick Clegg (Liberal Democrat) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 16 March 2006. It occurred during Debate on bills on Identity Cards Bill.
I should like to make some progress since time is short. Ramming through illiberal legislation to no obvious end, while failing to honour pledges made to the families of victims of murder over 10 years ago, reveals the extent to which the Government appear to have lost any sense of proportion, any clear sense of priorities, on this as on so many areas of public policy. I urge those in all parts of the House, and those following this debate in the other place, to reject the Government’s motion to disagree with the Lords’ excellent amendment.
