British Sign Language

Proceeding contribution from Dan Poulter (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 17 October 2023. It occurred during Debate on British Sign Language.

I congratulate my right hon. Friend on securing today’s debate. She has rightly outlined some of the

public service barriers faced by deaf people. A number of senior educationalists have suggested that British Sign Language be introduced as a GCSE in schools. Does she agree that that is worth exploring further? Will she urge the Minister to look at how that could not just break down barriers, but better support a lot of young people to understand the needs of deaf people and communicate with them better?
