Energy Bill

Proceeding contribution from Alan Duncan (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 22 January 2008. It occurred during Debate on bills on Energy Bill.
I shall move on, if I may. I am sure that the right hon. Gentleman will be called to speak, as he is a great expert on this subject. Despite considerable clamour from energy companies and the independent regulator, there is no mandate in the Bill for smart meters. Smart meters would not only make people more aware of the levels of energy that they consume; they would also give much better information to suppliers, to enable them to manage the peaks and troughs. The Energy Saving Trust has estimated that each household could make savings of up to 5 per cent. of their consumption through using such a meter.
