UK Borders Bill

Proceeding contribution from Lord Roberts of Llandudno (Liberal Democrat) in the House of Lords on Thursday, 11 October 2007. It occurred during Debate on bills on UK Borders Bill.
moved Amendment No. 17: 17: After Clause 17, insert the following new Clause— ““Withdrawal of support: repeal Section 9 of the Asylum and Immigration (Treatment of Claimants, etc. ) Act 2004 (c. 19) (failed asylum seekers: withdrawal of support) is repealed.”” The noble Lord said: My Lords, it is getting late and this is a massive moral question. Can we in any way justify any action which leads to destitution? In order to find out exactly what our opinion is, I beg to move the amendment and wish to call for a Division of the House. On Question, Whether the said amendment (No. 17) shall be agreed to? Their Lordships divided: Contents, 58; Not-Contents, 106.
