UK Borders Bill

Proceeding contribution from Angela Watkinson (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Monday, 5 February 2007. It occurred during Debate on bills on UK Borders Bill.
I pay tribute to the hon. Lady for her tenacity in dealing with this ongoing problem, not only in her constituency but nation wide. Does she accept, however, that, among many of the faith communities, arranged marriages are often very successful? In those circumstances, young people are introduced but there is no coercion to marry. It is left up to the young people to decide whether they could have a happy life together. Does she agree that that kind of halfway house might provide a way for us to make inroads into preventing forced marriages, by offering it as an acceptable cultural alternative?
