The noble Lord, Lord Stoddart, has reminded us again of the over-the-top proposal to ban smoking in cars, even if the next day another equally heavy smoker is to use the company car. If the allegedly dangerous chemicals produced by smoking are so persistent and long-lasting, will the Government control the sale of second-hand cars where the car has been owned by a smoker? We really need to know how long those dangerous chemicals persist in the fabric or the roof lining of a car. How long does a vehicle, or a room, go on being dangerous after the last smoker has left it?
