Equality Bill [Lords]

Proceeding contribution from Meg Munn (Labour) in the House of Commons on Monday, 21 November 2005. It occurred during Debate on bills on Equality Bill (HL).
Again, the hon. Gentleman takes me away from the specifics of the Bill. Clause 10 places the commission under a duty to promote good relations, work to eliminate hate crime and encourage participation in society. We recognise the significance of the commission’s good relations role with race and faith communities and have ensured that the commission for equality and human rights will be required to consider the particular importance of that. This reflects the need to build on the pioneering work of the Commission for Racial Equality in this area. It also enables us to underpin our commitment to support the important local race equality work carried out by the network of racial equality councils and others.
