Pensions: Financial Assistance Scheme

Written question asked by Lord Oakeshott of Seagrove Bay (Liberal Democrat) on Thursday, 12 January 2006, in the House of Lords. It was answered by Lord Hunt of Kings Heath (Labour) on Thursday, 12 January 2006.

Question

Further to the Statement by the Lord Hunt of Kings Heath on 22 November (Official Report, cols. 1577–79), how the figure of 15,000 people benefiting from payments from the financial assistance scheme was estimated.

Answer

Based on the limited data we have been able to obtain from affected pension schemes, this is our best estimate of the number of members of eligible schemes likely to be within the next three years of scheme pension age and have less the 80 per cent. of their core pension rights covered by their schemes.
