HENDERSON DEMOCRATIC THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY MODEL FOR THE TREATMENT OF PERSONALITY DISORDER

Early day motion sponsored by Paul Burstow (primary sponsor, Liberal Democrat), Tom Brake, Peter Bottomley, Lynne Jones, Norman Lamb and Colin Breed and tabled on Monday, 12 May 2008, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 81 members in total.
That this House welcomes the decision to hold the largest ever statutory consultation about the organisation and provision of tier 4 mental health services for people with personality disorders; is concerned that the Henderson Hospital personality service has been temporarily closed ahead of the consultation; notes that the Henderson democratic residential therapeutic community model is an effective treatment of complex personality disorder which reduces acute readmissions and interventions by the criminal justice system; is further concerned that flaws in NHS commissioning arrangements have put this specialist mental health service at risk of permanent closure; and calls on the Department of Heath and NHS London to take the steps necessary to safeguard the Henderson model and strengthen arrangements for commissioning specialist residential tier 4 mental health services for severe personality disorder in the future.
